With more than 50 PPRs built in recent years, Entec has invested heavily in product development and we can now offer PPRs in three distinct styles to fit the client’s technical and aesthetic requirements.
Steel Portal Frame
The ultimate in strength and longevity, these rooms comprise a structural steel base, a portal frame structure, external cladding and internal lining. Recent builds have been to a specified 50-year design life, and seismic importance level 4. Size and weight is only limited by the constraints of road transport, which varies depending on the final destination.
EPS Panel
This offers complete size flexibility (again, subject to transport constraints) and an attractive, clean appearance. The structure consists of a structural steel base, with the building envelope’s strength coming from the interlocking EPS (expanded polystyrene foam) panels used for the walls and roof.
Modified Shipping Container
Robust and recognisable as one of the most commonplace building structures all around the world. Entec carries an inventory of “single-use, as-new” containers which are strengthened and modified to fit the client requirements. We’ve worked with 10-foot, 20-foot and 40-foot containers, both standard height and high-cube, and we’ve welded two containers side-by-side to achieve “double-20 foot” and “double-40 foot” footprints. The containers are blasted and painted with a high grade paint specification for longevity.

We’ve built many rooms, and - to spare modesty for a moment - we've become really good at it. We will call on our past experience to design and build a prefabricated plant room quickly, efficiently and to an extremely high-quality standard. As momentum has grown in this part of the business we’ve evolved from building rooms as one-off projects into a volume manufacturing business. We build and fit out the rooms in a dedicated workshop space and have applied lean manufacturing principles to the entire process, from concept design through to fit-out, FAT and final QA.
Once we understand the basic requirements, we can produce a concept design and budget price. We build our own switchboards, motor control centre (MCC's) and control panels, so we have the design and coordination of these items under our own control; this means fewer parties for the customer or consultant to manage (“one throat to choke!”)

Entec has been installing engines, generators, switchboards, control panels and all manner of equipment since the business started in 1982. We’ve learnt through experience that quality, efficiency and safety are all increased when working in a workshop environment. Prefabricated plant rooms can be custom designed, built, tested and inspected. Site travel is reduced, site safety risks are minimised, and the workshop environment is usually cleaner and quieter than a construction site.
Our prefabricated industrial plant rooms are factory-acceptance tested at Entec’s workshop. A prefabricated plant room (PPR) or a prefabricated electrical switchroom or substation can significantly minimise project management requirements. On-site installation is relatively simple and efficient; the prefabricated plant room is then ready for commissioning.
We sometimes also refer to a the smaller prefabricated plant rooms as a mobile substation switchrooms or e-houses that offers a versatile solution. They can be easily transported by a container truck and installed temporarily at a construction site and for projects in remote areas where access to power is limited.
